About Alan
Alan’s practice focuses on Estate Planning and Administration, Real Estate and Corporate and Business Law. He routinely handles both residential and commercial real estate transactions. He also can assist in resolving problems involving land use, HOA matters, and other real estate issues. He’s also able to provide legal advice related to forming and running limited liability companies and corporations.
Alan has experience drafting complex wills and trusts (both revocable and irrevocable), charitable trusts, advanced medical directives, and health care powers of attorney, and has extensive experience in assisting fiduciaries who administer estates.
Alan serves as Commissioner of Accounts for Augusta County. As such, he assists the Augusta County Circuit Court in overseeing fiduciaries who handle property under the Court’s supervision. He also serves as Assistant Commissioner of Accounts for the City of Staunton.
Alan grew up in Staunton and attended Hampden Sydney College, where he graduated magna cum laude with his B.A. degree in 1984. He then graduated magna cum laude with his J.D. degree from Washington and Lee University School of Law in 1988. He was admitted to the Virginia State Bar that same year. Alan was a member of Phi Beta Kappa at Hampden-Sydney and of the Order of the Coif at W&L Law.
Alan began practicing law with Willcox & Savage, P.C. in Norfolk, VA and worked there until he returned to Staunton in 1992 to join Virginia B. Garrison, his mother, in the practice of law. Together, they formed Garrison Law Offices, P.C., where he worked until joining TimberlakeSmith in 2009.
In the time that he’s not practicing law, Alan likes to spend his time with his family outdoors, usually tending to their apple orchard in Churchville, VA.
